The 14th Annual Yakima Valley Sports Awards Luncheon, orchestrated by the Yakima Valley Sports Commission, was held earlier today (June 9) at the Yakima Visitors and Convention Center to honor top area high school teams, athletes and coaches during this recently completed school year.

Nominees and eventual winners were chosen by the Sports Department of the Yakima Herald-Republic. Some 21 different schools, from Cle Elum to Prosser to Goldendale were represented.

2015-16 Team of the Year honors went to the Selah baseball squad who, just weeks ago, captured the school's first-ever state title. The Male Athlete of the Year went to Roy Zavala of Mabton and the female award was presented, for the second-straight year, to LaSalle's Lauren Newman.

school records in basketball. His four-year career produced 1,812 points which ranks him sixth all-time of Yakima Valley scoring. He was named MVP in his league and first-team all-state in both football and basketball.

Newman was the Valley's leading goal scorer in soccer, a first-team all-league basketball player and added four state track medals to up her career total to 10. She also won a state championship in the long jump event and broke the 27-year-old Valley record. She will compete next at Washington State University.
