AC/DC’s ‘What Do You Do for Money Honey’ Used in Trailer for Upcoming Movie ‘Masterminds’

AC/DC songs have been used in movies and TV shows for several decades. Films ranging from Maximum Overdrive to Last Action Hero to Private Parts to Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby have used music from the iconic Australian band. Now, AC/DC's track "What Do You Do for Money Honey" from their 1980 album Back in Black is being used in the trailer for the upcoming movie Masterminds (watch above).

The song kicks in about halfway through the trailer. The movie, which stars Zach Galifianakis, Jason Sudeikis, Owen Wilson and Kristin Wiig, will hit theaters in October. The plot of the action comedy that's based on true events is described as follows: "A night guard at an armored car company in the Southern United States organizes one of the biggest bank heists in American history."

It hasn't be revealed how much the moviemakers paid to have the AC/DC song in the Masterminds trailer, but the band has received at least one pretty big check from a movie in the past. In a discussion about music placement, Thomas Golubic, who has done music placement for shows such as Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, reveals that the biggest deal he’s ever bartered was for AC/DC’s "Thunderstruck" in the 1999 film Varsity Blues.

"Thunderstruck" was licensed to the film for a whopping $500,000. “I remember being absolutely horrified when I heard that number,” Golubic recalls. ”And we spent a lot of time coming up with what we thought were great alternates, but there was going to be no budget on that, and they had money so they paid for it.”

AC/DC are in the midst of the Rock or Bust tour. They are currently in Europe, but will return to North America for shows beginning in Foxboro, Mass., on Aug. 22. For all their dates, go here.
