Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating JUST A LITTLE! I am a super astronomy geek though and aced the subject in college. I've watched both the Carl Sagan and Neil Degrasse Tyson versions of "Cosmos" and I have the book. So what I heard today put me over the moon. Pun intended. Nature.com is reporting a study that has discovered what is described an Earth-like planet orbiting the closest star to the Sun. The star Proxima Centauri is 4.2 light years from the sun and the planet astronomers have discovered by measuring Proxima Centauri's "gravitational wobble" (only explainable by the tugging of a nearby planet) has been dubbed Proxima b.

It is believed to be approximately 1.3 times the mass of the Earth. While it's just 4.4 million miles from its sun, Proxima Centauri is so dim that those studying the newly discovered planet believe that it's the perfect distance away to sustain an atmosphere and possibly liquid water... and perhaps earth-like life. While scientists aren't expecting to see bearded hipsters reading poetry next to ironic espresso shops, should further study show that the planet indeed does have an atmosphere and liquid water they may conclude that there are at least similar types of simpler organisms (microbes and bacteria) to those here on Earth.

I hope an unmanned craft can get close enough in my lifetime to snap a few pics from orbit but I doubt it.
