'Tis the season to be jolly and to break out your abacus and latest standings if you are a football fan.

With two weeks left in the NFL's regular season, teams are beginning to fall into place for playoff seeding, the Seattle Seahawks notwithstanding.

Following Sunday's convincing win over arch rival San Francisco 17-7, the Niners post-season hopes were dashed.  Seattle, meanwhile, has yet to officially clinch a spot and are currently seeded fifth but can also wind up with the #1 overall seed in the NFC if they win their final two contests.

They can cement a berth this weekend if one of a number of outcomes occurs, some of which they hold in their hands, others requiring help from other teams.

First, the Hawks must defeat the Arizona Cardinals in Phoenix, then

  • Philadelphia Eagles lose to, or tie, the Redskins.
  • Detroit Lions lose to, or tie, the Bears.
  • Green Bay Packers lose to, or tie, the Buccaneers.

Should the Seahawks-Cardinals game end in a tie, Seattle can advance if:

  • Eagles lose.
  • Lions and Packers lose.

God forbid but if the Seahawks lose on Sunday, they can still get in this weekend if the Eagles lose and the Dallas Cowboys win or tie against the Indianapolis Colts.

Clear as mud, eh?
