A great way to kick off the weekend for Avenged Sevenfold fans, as the band has released a new cover of Mr. Bungle's "Retrovertigo" (listen above). It follows their recent Spanish language track "Malagueña Salerosa," both as part of their evolving 2016 album The Stage.

It's definitely cool to hear A7X cover Mr. Bungle, the cult rock band that featured Faith No More singer Mike Patton. The original track found on Mr. Bungle's 1999 record California on the surface seems like a strange pick for the guys in Avenged Sevenfold. On the original, you hear mostly quiet and atmospheric parts that span out to create a mood, before the back half of the song comes in with full drama. The cover holds up the original dynamics but packs in a lot of Avenged Sevenfold's character. Atmosphere is instead created with thunderous guitar work featuring a Synyster-sounding riff that leads up to the song's explosive end. A great job!

Of the song, singer M. Shadows says, "We're massive fans of Mr. Bungle. 'Retrovertigo' is one of their softer songs and a particular favorite of ours and we thought it'd be a fun twist to make a heavy version. We hope this song encourages the uninitiated to dig a little deeper into the brilliant world of Mr. Bungle. Mike Patton is one of the greatest vocalists of our generation and it was pretty daunting for me to sing one of his songs, but we had a great time recording this track. More coming."

A7X have been having a pretty killer summer, acting as direct support to Metallica's Worldwired tour. They've revealed their plans to make The Stage an "evolving album," wherein they continuously update the album with new songs, keeping it an ever growing work.
