On June 9, everyone heard the news that a part of our childhood had passed. We knew him as Batman, the Caped Crusader. Adam West died last week at the age of 88.  We all have special memories of that campy 1960s “Batman” TV series.

Last Thursday night, hundreds of fans gathered — some in costume — at Los Angeles City Hall, joined by Burt Ward (Robin), Lee Meriwether (Catwoman). Yes, it was there too! The iconic Batmobile and a special appearance of that red telephone that Commissioner Gordon used when he needed to call Batman.

As the clock ticked toward 9 o’clock, Los Angeles turned into Gotham City. The hundreds of fans who gathered in front of City Hall were joined by fans around the world on social media. The cheering grew louder. The messages of tribute and love for Adam West and Batman flooded the online stream as L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti and Police Chief Charlie Beck turned on the bat signal.  Once again the iconic circle of light shone with a bat-shaped silhouette glowing on the City Hall tower.

But this time, the winged Batman emblem in the night sky wasn’t a call for help. It was to honor “The Bright Knight.” Our Batman.

This night the citizens of Gotham City stood as one.

But as one might wonder who will now look out for and protect the citizens of Gotham City, fear not. For there is one thing Adam West has left us … there is a Batman in all of us.  So when you have to choose, choose Batman. Always choose Batman!

Thank you to KIRO of Seattle for the live stream Thursday night. Thank you, Burt Ward, Lee Meriwether, Los Angeles and of course Adam West.

God bless.
