Billy Corgan Announces New ‘Experimental’ Album
Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan has finally announced the release of his first proper solo album, ‘AEGEA.’ You didn’t know that Billy Corgan recorded a set of “experimental recordings” back in 2007? And you didn’t realize the Smashing Pumpkins were still together? They are — sort of. But that’s a different story altogether.
The initial release is limited to 250 double-vinyl copies, each one hand-numbered and annotated by Corgan himself. A copy will set you back about $60 plus shipping, though you can save on shipping by purchasing your album at Madame ZuZu’s Tea House, Corgan’s tea shop in Chicago.
As for what Corgan means by “experimental recordings,” a press release quotes him as saying, “As a work, ‘AEGEA’ is experimental in nature, and comes across as more a soundtrack to some lost foreign film than the kind of music I’m usually associated with. Listening back I quite like how ‘AEGEA’ goes along, as it has qualities that are both meditative and alien; but not alienating.”
The album will come out sometime within the next two months. The wording on the website implies, but doesn’t say outright, that Corgan will make ‘AEGEA’ more widely available after the vinyl is sold out.
