For nearly two years, Billy Corgan has been talking up the possibility of a reunion of the original lineup of the Smashing Pumpkins. But now it could be coming closer to a reality. Earlier today, he posted a picture of himself, guitarist James Iha and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin in the studio to his instagram account. Of the foursome, only bassist D'arcy Wretzky is missing.

"Not sure what cross-eyed spy took this photo, but we had a visitor to the studio the other day," Corgan wrote. "So many memories when you put the three of us together."

While Chamberlin has been involved with several incarnations of the Pumpkins, Wretzky and Iha haven't worked with Corgan since 1999 and 2000, respectively. But in March 2016, Iha sat in on two songs Corgan at a Pumpkins show, and, five months later, Corgan said that he had patched up his differences with Wretzky. Iha also played on two songs during the sessions for Ogilala, Corgan's solo album that came out last year.

Although Corgan has been downplaying the idea of a reunion, saying that it was more about re-establishing his friendships, he nonetheless said almost exactly a year ago, "Things look good for us getting together to play. So, we're talking about it. We'll see."

Last June, Chamberlin added fuel to the fire by saying that the foursome had been talking about playing together this year. A few months later, while promoting Ogilala, Corgan suggested that he was ready to make it happen.

“I’m totally cool with the idea that if you come see some iteration of Pumpkins 5.0," he said, "it’ll be focused on the 90s era of work. It’ll be a real celebration – we’ll get the closure we never had. And a 22-year-old who has only ever heard about the myth can come and see it in some form. I think we’d still be fine.”
