Bungie Helped Sony Design PS4 Controller, Destiny Content to Remain PS Exclusive

Destiny developer Bungie and Sony have been doing business together longer than you think. Also, we have learned just how long Destiny’s PlayStation-only content will remain exclusive.

According to TechRadar, Bungie, the company behind Destiny and creators of the original Halo series, have been working with Sony for quite some time. Bungie originally broke a longtime partnership with Microsoft back in 2007 after the release of Halo 3. As per their closing arrangements, Bungie went on to make Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach. After closing its chapters in the Halo series, Bungie has gone on to make Destiny, and has been working closely with Sony ever since, despite plans for the game’s multi-console release. In a shocking twist, we have learned that Bungie helped Sony develop its DualShock 4 controller for the PlayStation 4.

“Sony’s been a really good partner all the way back to the beginning when we were first talking next-gen, and when we first started building Destiny. We really didn’t know where anybody was going, but it became really clear talking with Sony at the outset that their vision really aligned with where we wanted to go,” said Eric Osborne, Bungie’s head of community.

“They worked with us, of course, on core systems and the controller itself – making it better for shooters, helping improve that for players, helping include and improve the social aspects of the game.”

Osborne alluded that Microsoft’s gamers are already well-aware of the quality and innovative gameplay that Bungie brings with its name. Destiny’s PlayStation-exclusive content, which includes a co-op Strike mission, gear, ships and Crucible multiplayer map, are all there to help introduce Sony’s gaming community to the benefits of playing with Bungie and to sway those unfamiliar with the company’s work on Halo. Factoring in the new white PlayStation 4/Destiny bundle, the PS4’s exclusive alpha access and the prioritized entry into the beta for PlayStation users, it looks like Sony and Bungie are starting off strong.

In related news, MP1ST reports that Destiny’s PlayStation-only content will remain exclusive for a very long time. Destiny’s Amazon listing hinted that Xbox users might not be seeing the PlayStation-exclusive features of the game until a year after its release:

“Exclusive content for PlayStation 4 owners includes the Exodus Blue Competitive Multiplayer Map, Dust Palace Strike, Weapons, Ships and Gear that will only be on PlayStation until at least Fall 2015.”

This is certainly a heavy blow to Xbox users who have stuck by Bungie through thick and thin. Unfortunately, we have yet to hear of any exclusives or deals, both in-game and console-wise, that Bungie has made with Xbox.

Destiny is set for a Sept. 9 launch on PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Destiny’s beta will be launching first on PS3 and PS4 on July 17 for those who pre-ordered the game. There has yet to be any official word as to when Xbox users will have access to the beta.
