Tattoos seem to be growing in popularity, so can these permanent pieces of body art hinder your chances of landing work? It's an interesting question.

One study estimates 20 percent of all American adults have a tattoo and 40 percent under the age of 40 are sporting them. Despite evidence they are so prevalent, employers may be leery about hiring those with ink. One CareerBuilder survey revealed that 31 percent of employers say visible tattoos are the No. 1 reason not to go with an applicant.

Why the hate? Lots of people feel tattoos symbolize "risk-taking behaviors."
