‘xXx: Return of Xander Cage’ Clip: Vin Diesel and Donnie Yen Go ExXxtremely Off-Road

With 2016 finally drawing to a close, we can now turn our attention to the bumper crop of ridiculous blockbusters zooming around the corner towards us next year. One of these is xXx: Return of Xander Cage, which will see Vin Diesel return to the franchise built upon the probably drug-induced idea of “Guys, what if… extreme athletes… fought crime?” This week, Paramount gifted us with a new clip that pits Vin Diesel and Donnie Yen against not only each other, but also the forces of Nature itself.

The Worst Movies of 2016

There were a lot of great movies in 2016. There were! Please don’t let this list convince you otherwise. The movies were absolutely wonderful this year. Just not these specific movies. These were bad. So, so, so bad. Just awful.

As If We All Haven’t Been Through Enough Already, Paramount Delays ‘Baywatch’ One Week

2016 has already been a bastard of a year: beloved public figures died, Nazis became a thing again, America began its slow skid into fascism, and Bones got cancelled. When do the hits stop coming? Is there no respite from the barrage of tragedies that this monstrous year has heaped upon us? No, no there is not. Because throughout the seemingly unending cluster-F-word of 2016, one light on the horizon has held us up, both as a nation and as a human species. From indignity to indignity, we’ve always been able to pin our hopes on the glorious day of May 19, 2017 — known to you and I, of course, as the release date for the Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson-led reboot of beloved ‘90s lifeguard soap opera Baywatch. But even after this year’s parade of tragedies, [Don LaFontaine voice] there is one tragedy more.

Viola Davis and Denzel Washington Shine Once Again in the New ‘Fences’ Trailer

Has the word “Oscar” been thrown around enough lately in regards to Denzel Washington and Viola Davis’s Fences? No? We can keep saying it some more? Good. The latest trailer for the film, adapted from August Wilson’s play and directed by Washington himself, shows off the kind of vibrant acting that these two won Tonys for in the first place.

Rumor: Catwoman Will Not Appear in Ben Affleck’s ‘The Batman’

For as much as Tim Burton and Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies varied wildly in tone and aesthetics, one thing both franchises got right was the character of Catwoman. Michelle Pfeiffer played Selina Kyle in Batman Returns as a demented femme fatale, the true star of Burton’s sequel, while Anne Hathaway’s high-tech criminal was the perfect updating of the character for Nolan’s urban Batnoir. One unhinged and unbroken, the other sleek and urbane, the perfect summary of two separate directorial styles.

U.S. Court Dismisses MPAA Case Requiring Movies With Smoking to Be R-Rated

As times change, standards change, and we occasionally find ourselves bumping up against old traditions that need to retire. Even some of our most beloved childhood movies feature behavior and activities — smoking, strong language, casual misogyny — that went unnoticed and unappreciated by our older selves. Given the well-established health risks that smoking poses, one person recently took it upon himself to sue Hollywood in an attempt to get onscreen smoking banned. I’ll give a moment to guess who won.

Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Arrival’ Does Battle With ‘Doctor Strange’ and ‘Trolls’

It looks like the general public reacted to one of the most stressful weeks in living memory by flocking to the movies for a few hours of escape. Both Doctor Strange and Trolls, which debuted to solid numbers last week, held on strong. Arrival, the biggest newcomer of the bunch, also opened well, proving that it’s entirely possible to open in third place and still be a winner at the box office.

Ewan McGregor Explains Why He Nearly Turned Down ‘Star Wars’

Over the past few years, there has been a small but noticeable attempt to rehabilitate the image of the Star Wars prequels in popular culture. Last November, for example, the A.V. Club published an article on why the Star Wars prequels don’t deserve our hatred. Similar pieces have been published in The Mary Sue, USA Today, and many other websites and online publications. It just goes to show that there is a lid for every pot, no matter how misshapen that pot may be.

Surprise! Michael Moore Made a Secret Donald Trump Movie, and It Opens This Week

With Where to Invade Next, audiences saw a different, more optimistic side of Michael Moore. It was a fairly fun movie — at least in comparison to Moore’s other films, which are typically a bit pessimistic about American politics. If you thought the outspoken documentarian might sustain that positive attitude for his next film, you were mistaken. Moore’s latest project is a documentary he’s been working on in secret, and it’s all about this election year’s most controversial candidate: Donald Trump.
