For the eighth year, the city of Yakima is offering residents free biodegradable lawn and leaf bags.

Beginning Monday, you can get yours at the Public Works Complex, 2310 Fruitvale Blvd., between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Approximately 40,000 bags will be given away to residents of Yakima. Proof of residency is required.

The program is designed to reduce the amount of leaves that end up clogging the stormwater system. Solid Waste & Recycling Manager Loretta Zammarchi says most households usually require only five to 10 bags.

The bags are made primarily of cornstarch and disappear after being composted.
