Mom gets a text about putting a necktie on your duck. The guy who sits across from you at work gets a text about a clown made of marshmallows. Your ex-girlfriend gets a text about that one time when you saw Osama Bin Laden at Best Buy playing ‘Mario Kart.’ All of those texts can now easily be explained by the newest bedtime nuisance, sleep texting.

According to Dr. David Cunnington, a sleep specialist in Australia, sleep texting is a “rare condition” in which people will send incoherent text messages in their sleep, and then not remember doing so in the morning. “We have had patients who have reported sending text messages to their friends and family while asleep. It is one of those things that happens, but it is very rare, and certainly not a common trend,” he said.

He claims the cause of this sleep texting condition is most likely the sufferer’s busy waking life. “People are doing so much during a normal day that it can mean that they feel like they’re ‘on call’ even at night,” he said. And he believes the only cure is to leave the phone outside the bedroom.

So, if you’re having trouble sleeping, you should consider leaving your phone in a different room. If it’s really that important, you just tell everyone about schooling Bin Laden at WWE ’12 in an email the next morning.
