A few years back it appeared as though the classic lineup of Hole were on the verge of reuniting, with Courtney Love posting photos online and even publicly discussing the desire to play again with her band. But the reunion did not come to fruition. However, a new photo posted by Love has once again fanned the potential reunion flames.

On Friday (May 6), Love posted an Instagram selfie of herself with bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur and drummer Patty Schemel, with guitarist Eric Erlandson being the only missing band member in the shot. "With the girls, serving up a Hole lot of something, maybe," teased Love in the post, which you can see below.

In 2014, it appeared as though a reunion was in the works as all four band members were in the studio together. But later in the year, Love ruled out the reunion, stating, “I don’t want to get on the oldies circuit. I don’t need to do that for money. I want to put out music that is relevant today. [Being] one of the last chicks in a rock ‘n’ roll band is a weird place to be. It’s scary not to be selling out." She went on to add that it didn't make sense to her for the band to reunite unless they had something relevant to say.

Earlier this year, Melissa Auf Der Maur shed some light as to why the reunion plans didn't proceed, as it appeared that not everyone was on the same page as to what they wanted out of the reunion. The bassist revealed that she wasn't necessarily receptive to the idea of working on new music and returning to the road as a fully functioning touring act.

“I don’t do anything for money. When I imagine us playing outdoor daytime stages to, like, beer-soaked 20 year olds who don’t even know Hole or listen to records, that doesn’t sound healing or celebratory," said the bassist. She felt the best option was to dig into the band's vaults and put together a proper retrospective release with some shows to support it.

“Those three albums [Pretty on the Inside, Live Through This and Celebrity Skin] are all unique and incredible. Courtney [Love] is a once-in-a-generation piece of art. She is f–kin’ incredible. And, yes, her drama sometimes overshadows the power of the band. The power of the band, the arc of the albums and her performing abilities, we have it all on tape everywhere. We have proof of it and I would love to have it in one place. I support that story and I would be happy to put it in an incredible archival package. But that doesn’t mean playing a thousand f–kin’ festivals for money. If you wanna talk about the archives and you wanna talk about the brilliant past then I’ll have a conversation," explained Auf Der Maur, who later added, "I really would just like to finish what we started. It’s still unresolved to me."

So time will tell if Love's photo was merely a case of onetime bandmates who are once again friendly hanging out and enjoying themselves or if it turns into something bigger like a reunion.
