On June 6, 1944, 72 years ago, an incredible and heart-wrenching thing happened. The Allies invaded Normandy and ended Hitler's World War II dream of the Nazis taking over the whole world. Some 1,000 German troops died but, the U.S. and our allies lost near 10,000 people on "D-Day."It is considered the largest land, air and sea strike ever. This strike landing included more than 5,000 ships, 11,000 airplanes and more than 150,000 servicemen.

We remember those we lost on that day. My uncle was part of this airstrike. He didn't lose his life at that time, but he has passed since. My mom said that he was never the same again. He died from alcoholism. I am sure that D-Day had something to do with this.

Here is a documentary that pretty much tells it all.
