Former Asking Alexandra frontman Danny Worsnop is prepping the self-titled debut album from his new group We Are Harlot, which arrives on March 31. Loudwire Nights host Full Metal Jackie recently chatted with Worsnop about the band’s debut effort, his rock ‘n’ roll influences and more. Check out the interview below:

Danny, as a musician what makes a release of a new band's first album different from the eagerness and anticipation you get from any other album you'll ever release?

The first album always has a completely different feel because it’s special. It's almost a birth. We’ve been doing this for a few years now, waiting for it to come out, playing shows and stuff. So a first album, it becomes real. The first time it properly exists in the world. It’s the first time that all the hard work put in is exhibited to the world. I mean, no matter how much we’ve played something live, it’s not the same. But, then we start making a bunch of money. That's always a perk.

What makes We Are Harlot and the music you're making now with this band so important to your sense of creative fulfillment?

It’s a chance to make the kind of music I’ve grown up with, and the kind of music that’s always been my passion in my heart that I’ve never particularly had a chance to get it out. I grew up on a lot of Aerosmith, Rolling Stones, things like that, along with a lot of blues things like Wilson Pickett. Things like that, so it’s a chance for me to explore new things, and to do things that I’ve never been able to do before and to really create what’s been inside of me my life that I’ve never been able to get out.

Initially the music you started writing with Jeff [George] was said to be a solo album. What changed your thinking that it should actually be the basis for a new band?

We started just jamming off of ideas from Bruno [Agra's] old band, I believe 3 and a half or 4 years ago, and then it was just like jamming out – like a full thing. Then Jeff came on board, and we started really coming up with songs and holding music in. I was on tour in Europe at the time, and we had been working so well together, and it was just such unified feeling that I wanted it to be a real band, and be a real thing. We instantly just started jumping of band names, and it was really like the forming of a brotherhood however much we were very close and friends before. We took the next step. It was obviously the best thing to do. It’s paid off, because we all have so much invested in this. There’s so much love and passion for the band. It just made sense.

Your mission statement is that real rock ‘n’ roll needs to be back front and center. Where did real rock go? How is We Are Harlot best suited to be the band to bring it back?

I think music, and especially rock music, has gotten stuck in this idea that you have to conform to this one sound. It’s become very cookie cutter where you turn on the radio or a music channel on TV, or go to a concert or a festival and nine out of 10 bands sound exactly the same ’cause they’re all copying the same formula. They’re just cutting and pasting what’s already there and not doing anything new or unique. It's become that everyone is just a copy of each other. It’s horrible, and we just approach it differently. We’re like we’re gonna make the music we love. We’re gonna bring in our influences and mix it all together and make this amazing entity that no one’s heard before.

We are Harlot name checks Aerosmith, Van Halen, KISS. American based bands with lots of swagger. What appeals most to a British kid such a distinct American style of music?

I think mostly it was what I was brought up with. I’ve always been a blues fan. My grandfather sang the blues. It was always heavily around me, it was also the Stones but at the same time they were so heavily influenced by American music and by American blues. It was what I was surrounded by and it spoke to me. I'm not sure what it was, but it resonated with me on a deeper level where it was just always there, I became it.
