Dave Grohl Calls Foo Fighters’ Reading Set Their ‘Last Show for a Long Time’

Dave Grohl told the massive crowd watching his Foo Fighters perform at the Reading festival on Sunday night (Aug. 26) in Reading, England that the concert would be the band’s last show for a long time — directly contradicting the Foo Fighters’ itinerary, which has four more U.S. festival appearances still scheduled for 2012.

“Well, well, well. The f—ing Reading festival,” Grohl told the Reading audience near the beginning of the headlining set, according to a report from NME. “You guys realize we’ve got a lot of songs to play. It’s the last show of the tour and it’s the last show for a long time.”

Are the Foo Fighters cancelling their remaining concerts? Not likely. We’re going to go ahead and assume that Grohl was speaking directly to his European fans, as the Foos did wrap up a tour there with the Reading appearance and don’t have any more Euro gigs scheduled.

After the Foo Fighters fulfill their remaining commitments in the U.S. – a Rock the Vote event in Charlotte, N.C., on Sept. 5; the Music Midtown festival in Atlanta on Sept. 21; the Deluna Festival in Pensacola, Fla., on Sept. 22 and the Global Festival in New York’s Central Park on Sept. 29 — expect them to take a long and much deserved break from the road. They’ve been touring pretty consistently since dropping ‘Wasting Light’ in April 2011.

During the Reading set, Grohl also took the opportunity to honor his former Nirvana bandmates Krist Novoselic and Kurt Cobain with the song ‘These Days.’ “I’d like to dedicate this song to a couple of people who couldn’t be here tonight,” Grohl reportedly said before the band launched into the song. ”This one’s for Krist and this one’s for Kurt.’

Foo Fighters’ headlining set at Reading this year also marks the 20th anniversary of Nirvana’s own legendary 1992 headlining performance at Reading, which Novoselic himself once called “a triumph for the band.” That gig was released in 2009 as a CD/DVD set titled ‘Live at Reading.’
