Ronnie James Dio's former guitarist Doug Aldrich talked about the hologram of the late legendary frontman that has been appearing on tour since 2016. He says that while he'd like to check out the virtual performance, he doesn't think Dio himself would approve of it.

“Everyone keeps asking me about the hologram thing ... I would like to see it myself, just to see it," Aldrich tells the White Line Fever podcast, which can be heard below, with his segment beginning around the hour and 10 minute mark. "I love hearing those songs, I love Ronnie, so that would be cool, but I think Ronnie would be pissed. I think so. Ronnie would be, like, 'C’mon, let me be dead in peace!’ Ronnie was a no-frills guy. He was not down for stuff like that.”

Aldrich, who currently plays guitar for The Dead Daisies, then talked about a chance conversation he had with Wendy Melvoin, who was a guitarist for The Revolution, the backing band for Prince. He asked her what she thought of the projection of Prince during Justin Timberlake's performance at this year's Super Bowl.

“At the Super Bowl, they had a halftime show with Prince," Aldrich says. "A big curtain came down and there was kind of a projection of Prince. It was, like, 300 feet tall. It was really cool, I thought. My neighbor is the old guitar player for Prince, Wendy. She had gotten her son a basketball hoop and was trying to assemble it by herself. I hadn’t met her yet. I went over and said 'You need a hand, I think’ and she’s like ‘Yeah, yeah. I don’t know how the hell...there’s all these parts’. We built this hoop for her together and said, ‘Oh, by the way, what do you think Prince would think about that?’ She goes, ‘He’d hate it - hate, hate it!’ But I thought it was great. So I’d love to see the hologram thing. I just hope they get it to be bigger than life because that’s how Ronnie was.”

The Dio hologram debuted at the Wacken Air Festival in 2016 and did some shows with Dio Disciples last fall. Ronnie's widow Wendy Dio said earlier this year that the three-dimensional performance needs some tweaking but that it will be back on the road as early as the beginning of next year.

"It was a good test, we did very well, but there's things I need to perfect on Ronnie. I'm really very critical," she said in an interview. "I need to perfect his face a little bit more - his eyes and his eyebrows are not quite right to me. So we're back on the drawing board right now. And we're hoping it will go out again probably the beginning of next year, and we will hit Canada and America. But it has to be right first."
