Honestly, did you ever think you’d see the day that Dave Grohl would embrace Courtney Love? After a tremendous of legal battle over the rights to Nirvana‘s music, the band’s surviving members seemed to put their feud with Love to rest during Nirvana’s induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The decision to allow Courtney Love, the widow of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, to take the stage and give a speech was a surprising one. Although the Rock Hall induction ceremony crowd threw some boos in Love’s direction, the Hole frontwoman remained composed while speaking on Kurt Cobain’s behalf.

“I have a big speech, but I’m not gonna say it,” Love began. “We all start bands when we’re kids and this is my family I’m looking at right now. I just wish Kurt could have been here.” After those words, Love embraced Novoselic, Kurt Cobain’s mother and most surprising of all, Dave Grohl.

Love continued, “Tonight he [Cobain] would have really appreciated it. I just want to give this to our daughter Frances Bean, who couldn’t be here because she was ill.”

Later on, surviving Nirvana members Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl and Pat Smear later took the stage for a monumental performance. First off, rock legend Joan Jett took the role of Kurt Cobain with a performance of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ before Sonic Youth‘s Kim Gordon joined Nirvana for ‘Aneurysm.’ Keeping the hot streak going, songstress Annie Clark (aka St. Vincent) took center stage for ‘Lithium,’ while pop superstar Lorde stepped up to sing ‘All Apologies.’

Furthermore, the entire cavalry (sans Lorde) ventured off to small Brooklyn club St. Vitus after the Rock Hall ceremony, performing a full set of Nirvana songs. In addition to the eclectic group of musicians, Deer Tick’s John McCauley and Dinosaur Jr.’s J. Mascis contributed to the Brooklyn set.

Early this morning (April 11), Krist Novoselic sent a thankful tweet to Courtney Love, to which the Hole frontwoman responded:

Love also tweeted a picture of her onstage embrace with Dave Grohl:
