Dave Grohl Admits That Next Foo Fighters Album Takes Some Chances, but Not Too Many

Two weeks after word got out that the next Foo Fighters album will be recorded in a bunch of different cities in a bunch of different studios, Dave Grohl is now talking about his ambitious plan.

In a new interview with Billboard, Grohl said that the record, which will be documented in an HBO TV series that follows the band as it moves from city to city and studio to studio, is going for an “emotional connection.”

The untitled album, scheduled for release later this year, has its roots in Grohl’s 2013 ‘Sound City‘ project, in which he got together with a whole bunch of musicians to record and pay tribute to a Los Angeles studio that was home to many of rock’s greatest LPs.

“I thought, ‘I want to do this again, but instead of just walking into a studio and telling its story, I want to travel across America and tell its story,’” Grohl told Billboard.

He also told the magazine that despite the Foos’ success over the years, they don’t plan on just coasting. Then again, they don’t plan on going too crazy with big ideas either.

“Now we have license to get weird,” he said. “If we wanted, we could make some crazy, bleak Radiohead record and freak everyone out. Then I thought, ‘F— that.’ … The music is a progression or an evolution, for sure, but it’s a Foo Fighters record.”
