Fred Durst Denies Being Ejected From WWE ‘SummerSlam’ After Flipping the Bird at Camera

Fred Durst

Among the many celebrities that attended WWE’s ‘Summerslam’ on Aug. 19, was Limp Bizkit vocalist Fred Durst. As the camera panned to Durst during the live pay-per-view event, the nu-metal musician scrunched up his face and raised a middle finger to the camera that was broadcast into the homes of millions of wrestling fans. Rumor quickly spread that Durst was kicked out of ‘Summerslam’ after flipping the bird, but the non-backwards-hatted Durst has just claimed that the reason he left his seat was to go backstage and offer an apology.

Middle fingers were not only commonplace during the late ’90s / early ’00s ‘Attitude Era’ of the then-WWF, but were celebrated as a trademark of the legendary ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin. However, the WWE has since developed into a PG product, where even legends such as WWE wrestler and Fozzy frontman Chris Jericho can get suspended for throwing down a foreign country’s flag and kicking it.

Fred Durst surely remembers the ‘Attitude Era’ days of the WWF, so flipping a middle finger probably seemed like no big deal, but due to the hand gesture, Durst was either ejected from the arena, or offered his apology backstage before leaving early to “beat traffic.” A WWE rep reportedly acknowledged to TMZ that Durst did indeed apologize and was not kicked out of the event. “We appreciate Fred’s apology,” says the rep. “However, we take our family-friendly environment very seriously and this was a violation of that. We sincerely apologize to our fans.”

After being questioned by fans as to whether he was given the boot by the WWE, Durst tweeted, “I was leaving to beat the traffic! Haha, security escorting me out?? WWE is family. hahaha. Is this really a rumor? Amazing. My boys at WWE are cracking up! Note — never leave early to beat traffic!”
