The big new remake of ‘Godzilla’ is finally here, and it marks the 60th anniversary of Japan’s legendary nuclear monster. So if you want to do some history and have more fun with Godzilla films from the past, as well as catch up with one of the greatest creature movies of all time, here’s more malevolent monster fun you can have this weekend.
‘Godzilla Vs The Smog Monster’ (1971)
One of our personal favorite Godzilla flicks, here the Big G is in his heroic phase, trying to save Japan from a sludgy, red-eyed monster created from pollution. This is an ecologically correct Godzilla that features hippies, an insane drug hallucination scene and an opening song called ‘Save the Earth’ that pleads with the audience to be more careful with our planet, long before the threat of global warming and other modern ecological catastrophes.
If the new ‘Godzilla’ is the monster hit that everyone expects, a lot of fans would love to see ‘Mothra’ make a return to the big screen. The thought of him battling Godzilla would be a hell of a tag team. There’s tons of other Japanese giant monster movies to redo, like ‘Rodan’ and ‘Gamera,’ but ‘Mothra’ deserves the next reboot for modern-day audiences.
‘Godzilla 2000′ (1999)
Where a lot of Hollywood remakes take themselves way too seriously, ‘Godzilla 2000’ was the kind of Godzilla film that the big studio should have made in 1998, because it’s totally in the right spirit. The dubbing is bad, the monster is still a guy in a suit and it’s got great, funny dialogue (“Why does he keep protecting us?” “Maybe Godzilla is inside each one of us”). If you want to watch a really fun ‘Godzilla’ movie, this one’s for you.
