Green Day Honor Deceased Teenage Fan
Between promoting their new albums and dealing with Billie Joe Armstrong's stint in rehab, the members of Green Day have plenty of things going on these days -- but they still managed to take a few moments yesterday (Nov. 20) to commemorate the untimely death of a teenage fan.
Bassist Mike Dirnt took to the band's website to share a message of support for the family of Kaelem Hainsworth, an Irish teen (and huge Green Day fan) who passed away on Sunday (Nov. 18). "It is with great sadness that I have to inform you that Kaelem Hainsworth, a Green Day fan in Dublin, passed away suddenly at the young age of 17, and we want to send our deepest condolences to Kaelem's family and friends," wrote Dirnt. "His funeral is this Thursday, which falls on Thanksgiving in the United States, and hearing sad news around the holidays always makes it more upsetting. Kaelem, you will forever be missed."
The details of Hainsworth's death haven't been reported, but his sudden passing and strong love of the band's music prompted a Twitter campaign -- via the #makekaelemsdaygreen hashtag -- to get Green Day to acknowledge his death. Dirnt's brief message probably only took a few minutes to write and post, but it must have made a huge difference to Hainsworth's grieving loved ones.
