Ivanka Trump Claims to Have Had a ‘Punk Phase,’ Cites Grunge Bands
Listen, just because you're born with immense privilege 99.99% of the world will never see, or never have to work a day of real labor in your life, doesn't mean you can't have a rebellious punk phase...right? Well, that's what Ivanka Trump wants you to believe, in her recently published memoir Raising Trump, which came out Oct. 10. In the biography, she goes into detail about her teenage years, and the fact that she claims to have had a punk phase.
In a recently revealed excerpt from The Cut, Trump writes, "During my punk phase in the '90s, I was really into Nirvana. My wardrobe consisted of ripped corduroy jeans and flannel shirts. One day after school, I dyed my hair blue. Mom wasn’t a fan of this decision. She took one look at me and immediately went out to the nearest drugstore to buy a $10 box of Nice’n Easy. That night, she forced me to dye my hair back to blond. The color she picked out was actually three shades lighter than my natural color… and I have never looked back!"
She wrote more about her feelings towards the band, saying, "It wasn’t too long after this that Kurt Cobain, the singer, songwriter and guitarist for Nirvana, committed suicide. It was a shock and I was distraught. Mom had no idea who Kurt Cobain was, and she sympathized only so much. After 24 hours of my crying inconsolably in my room, alone—major melodrama—Mom had to pull me out of there to go down to dinner."
It's kind of a bizarre excerpt, especially considering the fact that everything she describes is way closer to grunge than "punk." Regardless of your political opinions, there seems to be little chance Trump has ever come into contact with punk rock in any form other than maybe flipping through MTV in her giant house.
