Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood, Philip Selway Prepare New Music

Because it looks like it’s going to be a while before we get a new Radiohead album — they haven’t even walked into a studio yet — we guess this is the closest we’re going to get to new music from them for the time being: Guitarist Jonny Greenwood and drummer Philip Selway both have new solo material due soon.

Selway is set to deliver his second solo offering, ‘Weatherhouse,’ on Oct. 7. The album’s first video, for the song ‘Coming Up for Air,’ has just been released. The song is a slow-grooving, hypnotic gem, with echoes of early Radiohead in play.

The video itself, directed by acclaimed Spanish film collective NYSU, is washed in a sort of film-noir surrealism that perfectly suits the music. “Good videos can make you rethink the song that you’ve written,” said Selway in a press release. See if you agree:

The album, recorded mostly at Radiohead’s studio in Oxfordshire, England, is a collaboration with Adem Ilhan and Quinta, who were previously part of Selway’s backing band.

“From the outset we wanted the album to be the three of us, and we covered a lot of instruments between us,” said Selway. “With a studio full of inspiring gear and a great-sounding desk, we felt like a band. Different musicians stretch you, and I felt stretched on Weatherhouse, but very enjoyably so.”

Meanwhile, guitarist Greenwood debuted some new material of his own at a concert in London this week. Titled ‘Skip Loop,’ Greenwood was joined onstage by the London Contemporary Orchestra to create a dreamlike, ethereal piece of music, which you can watch below.

The meditative song borders on the ambient, and isn’t too far removed from some of the things Brian Eno did in the late ’70s. Greenwood is also working a new piece with the Australian Chamber Orchestra called ‘Water,’ which will premiere throughout Europe in October.
