Mariners Fans Await Edgar Martinez Hall Of Fame Fate To Be Revealed Later Today
Fans of the Seattle Mariners will soon find out if the team will have a third member inducted in to the National Baseball Hall of Fame this afternoon.
Edgar Martinez, who spent his entire and illustrious career in an M's uniform, will find out - as well as the rest of the baseball world - as to whether or not he gets the HOF nod at 3:00 p.m. this afternoon when all of the votes are finally tabulated. Martinez needs to meet the requisite 75% threshold to join former Mariners broadcaster Dave Niehaus and iconic outfielder Ken Griffey, Jr. as the only members of the club in Cooperstown. As of this writing, "Papi" (as he was respectfully called by teammates) stands at 77.1% with 188 ballots still to be counted, meaning he needs to be included on 72.3% of the outstanding votes (133).
Should Martinez get the call later today, he would become the first player in MLB history to enter the hall as a player that was primarily a Designated Hitter. Results will be revealed live on MLB Network.
Good luck, Gar!
