Metallica’s Kirk Hammett Returns to Roots Playing on Exodus’ ‘Salt in the Wound’

It’s coming full circle for Kirk Hammett, as he’ll have the opportunity to appear on a new Exodus song on their upcoming album. The Metallica guitarist started his career with Exodus, and he’s taken several opportunities to rekindle the friendship with his former band over the past year.

According to Rolling Stone, Hammett has lent his skills to a song on the band’s upcoming album. He explained, “I play a guitar solo on the new Exodus album,” before revealing it’s on a track called ‘Salt in the Wound.’ He added, “It felt really casual, really cool — just like it did back in 1980 when we were all just hanging out back in the day. Me, recording a solo on their album was a huge thing for me. Other than the Exodus demo that’s been heard by a lot of people, it’s the only time I ever recorded with Exodus. It was a huge thing.”

Speaking about the song itself, the guitarist added, “[It has a] super heavy [riff]. I play a pretty cool solo and then Gary [Holt] comes in and plays another solo, and you know what? I listened to that and thought, ‘Wow, it’s 1982 all over again and here we are, Gary and I are trying to cut each other’s heads off with our guitar solos.’ Nothing has changed much in the last 30 years. I love it. I love those guys. I’ve only known them for most of my life, so I’m really happy that I finally got to record with them.”

Hammett invited the group to partake in his inaugural Fear FestEvil bash back in February, eventually joining Exodus onstage to perform ‘Piranha’ and a cover of Blue Oyster Cult’s ‘Godzilla.’ He’ll reunite with Exodus again tonight (July 25) in San Diego as the band plays the Fear FestEvil After Party at Comic-Con. In addition to Hammett, Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo is expected to join their set along with several other “special guests.”

Meanwhile, Hammett also dished on his “day job” with Metallica. He reiterated, “The band needs to make an album. That’s the big adventure that’s looming up on the horizon.” The group debuted a track called ‘Lords of Summer’ earlier this year, and Hammett confirms that the song is viewed as the starting point for the new album. “Whether the songs will actually sound like ‘Lords of Summer’ or not remains to be seen, because we still have to write them, but that’s the general direction we’re headed in,” explained Hammett, who concluded, “I want to make a quick album, but I just know that’s not realistic.”
