Microsoft Repotedly Planning Virtual Reality Headsets

Could a virtual reality headset be on its way to the Xbox platform? We might find out this week at the Game Developers Conference.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that an insider source claimed Microsoft is developing both VR headsets and augmented reality technology in a secret attempt to bring VR to Xbox. This source claimed that in October 2013, Microsoft filed a patent for a “head-mounted display device,” which would likely used for virtual reality-based titles.

Microsoft could possibly be unveiling their VR headset at this week’s Game Developers Conference in order to compete with the long-rumored PlayStation 4 VR headset that is anticipated to finally be announced GDC as well. Due to the PlayStation 4 beating the Xbox One in terms of sales, many are keeping a close eye onto what both Sony and Microsoft announce at the GDC this week. If Sony were to announce a fully functional VR headset with Microsoft not announcing anything, Sony could possibly gain an even further lead over Microsoft.

Sony has it’s own GDC session scheduled for today, titled “Driving the Future of Innovation at Sony Computer Entertainment,” so we will be seeing whether or not the PlayStation 4 will be getting some bonuses in the form of augmented reality. Sony president Shuhei Yoshida, Senior Software Engeineer and SCEA R&D Senior Richard Marks will be the ones in charge of leading the panel.
