Have you got a PlayStation 4 or an Xbox One? Are you also a Call of Duty fan? Then you should be excited, since the new Call of Duty is being developed with next-gen consoles as the lead platform.

Activision's CEO, Eric Hirshberg, has told IGN that the next Call of Duty game, developed by Sledgehammer Games, is being built specifically for the next-gen platforms.

"Sledgehammer is approaching this as a next-gen-first development," Hirshberg said. "Obviously in the console-transition year, anyone who developed a cross-generational game last year had to deal with the fact that the technology of the next-gen platforms was still coming into focus and changing quite a bit during the development process…. Now that we have the next-gen hardware out in the marketplace and solid, that is our primary development.”

There's no word on exactly how Sledgehammer will tailor the experience of the next Call of Duty to take advantage of each machine's inherent capabilities, but it will likely be different from any other Call of Duty game that's come in the past.

Despite the fact that Sledgehammer's focus will be on developing for the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Hirshberg said that the next Call of Duty "will also be a great current-gen game." With regard to 2014 being a continuation of the transition to next-gen, Hirshberg said, "There are still a lot of people playing on current gen and we want to deliver a great experience for them as well. But it will be a next-gen-first production and the current-gen game will be a version of that.”
