The new state-of-the-art turf at Zaepfel Stadium is ready for spring sports, according to Jim Wright, the Yakima School District's construction principal.

About 18,000 square feet of turf has replaced grass at the stadium on 40th Avenue where Eisenhower and Davis high schools play their home football and soccer games. It's the

same turf the Seahawks play on at CenturyLink Field in Seattle. It's similar to the artificial surface many people use on outdoor patios, but it's infused with rubber.

"It starts with a basalt-type sand that's blended with rubber," Wright explains.

The new turf is great in any weather, he adds -- especially rain, because unlike most grass fields, it has an efficient drain system.

Wright notes that the multipurpose turf belongs to the entire school district, so every school will have a chance to play on it in the future. It will be used for both football and soccer.

The first athletic events on the new turf will be soccer this coming spring. Along with the new turf the district has also installed new lighting, a new rubberized track and new ticket booths. Work continues on an the adjacent field, where track and field events, a practice field and a baseball field should be ready to use this spring.
