The world has lost one of the great leaders and a key figure in the human rights movement as former South African President Nelson Mandela has died at the age of 95.

In 1962, Mandela was arrested upon returning home from military training in Morocco and Ethiopia and was charged with illegal exit of the country and incitement to strike. In 1964, he was sentenced to life in prison for sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the government. He represented himself at the hearing and rather than defend himself, he gave a lengthy speech about oppression.

Mandela became a focal point for many in the fight for equality in South Africa and by the late '80s a shift began in the political atmosphere. By 1990, he was released from jail. In 1994, apartheid in South Africa ended and in the first multi-racial elections in the country, Mandela was elected president. After serving one term, he opted not to run for a second and used his remaining years to champion human rights and world peace causes as well as the fight against AIDS.

As expected, the man who helped unite a divided nation and affected so many people has generated an outpouring of comments from people of all walks of life. A number of rockers have chimed in via Twitter and below is a sampling of quotes from the likes of Guns N' Roses, Godsmack, Nikki Sixx, David Draiman, Tom Morello and Tommy Lee among others.
