Former Nirvana Drummer Chad Channing Up for Playing With Surviving Members

Charles Peterson, Sub Pop Records

Though he wasn’t around for the band’s explosive ‘Nevermind’ breakthrough, onetime Nirvana drummer Chad Channing still has a soft spot for his former group and says he’d be up for playing with the surviving members if the opportunity arose.

Channing wasn’t inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with fellow Nirvana members earlier this year, but the drummer says that he’d still take part if Dave Grohl or Krist Novoselic were interested in a reunion of sorts. When asked about such a possibility, Channing told NME, “Yeah, if they wanted me to. It’d maybe be something like Dave playing guitar and singing and Krist doing bass. That’d be about the only arrangement I could think of that we could pull off.”

Though Grohl and Novoselic have collaborated some in recent years, the pair have been careful not to touch any Nirvana material since Kurt Cobain‘s 1994 death. That all changed at the 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony, where after Nirvana’s induction, Grohl, Novoselic and guitarist Pat Smear played Nirvana classics live for the first time in 20 years, featuring guest vocal performances by Joan JettSonic Youth‘s Kim Gordon, St. Vincent‘s Annie Clark and Lorde.

Channing, who played on the ‘Bleach’ album and laid down drum tracks for ‘Polly’ on the ‘Nevermind’ disc, was saluted by Grohl, the man who replaced him, during Nirvana’s Rock Hall induction. When asked about his thoughts on the Rock Hall choosing not to induct him, Channing explained, “I’m fine about it actually. I’ve always sort of felt that for me, everything’s so much more about the music than the accolades.”

These days the drummer has stepped up to front the band Before Cars. The group has since released two albums.
