This upcoming, tabletop version of Portal was initially conceived by Valve employees before going to any official board game publisher.

Polygon reported that the idea for the Portal board game did not come from its publisher, Cryptozoic Entertainment, but was originally conceived by Valve. Allegedly, Valve worked on a prototype of the board game for a year before even approaching Cryptozoic with its premise. Cryptozoic Entertainment is known for its multitude of board/card games based on popular, preexisting franchises such as 'The Walking Dead,' 'Adventure Time' and Assassin's Creed.

Being developed under the the non-finalized name of Portal: Uncooperative Cake Acquisition Game, this tabletop adventure pits two to four Aperture Labs test subjects in a competitive, yet cooperative, setting where the game's signature gateways must be used in order to solve elaborate puzzles in each laboratory room before proceeding to the next.

According to Cryptozoic, the Portal board game is expected to debut in late 2014.
