Quentin Tarantino Wants to Make a 4-Hour ‘Django Unchained’ Miniseries

While we’re still not sure what Quentin Tarantino‘s next film will be, the director was at the Cannes Film Festival and revealed he’s looking to revisit one of his previous films. The director told an audience at a press conference celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Cannes premiere of ‘Pulp Fiction’ that he’s got about 90 minutes of unseen footage from ‘Django Unchained‘ that he would like to adapt into a 4-hour/4-part cable miniseries.

Tarantino’s specific plans remain vague at this point, but we’re guessing he wants to essentially create an “extended cut” of ‘Django’ with the additional 90 minutes of footage, cutting it into the film’s existing 180 minute runtime. This isn’t the first time Tarantino has referenced a new cut of ‘Django Unchained’ telling press when the film was released:

I could do what Kevin Costner did with the expanded edition of ‘Dances with Wolves,’ and I could very well do that. Because if I put some of that in I have to change the story.

Tarantino is referring to Costner’s “Special Edition” cut of ‘Dances With Wolves’ that ran 4 hours and was broadcast on ABC in 1993. (Francis Ford Coppola did something similar, editing ‘The Godfather’ and ‘The Godfather Part II’ into one 7-hour miniseries that aired on NBC over four consecutive nights back in 1977.)

What’s interesting about Tarantino’s plans is that most critics felt that ‘Django Unchained’ was already too long in its theatrical cut, and that the director struggled with the pace of the film after his longtime editor, Sally Menke, died shortly before production began. Would adding another hour into the movie actually help?

Tarantino often likes to think out loud about potential projects, so it’s possible that he’s just vamping here and has no concrete plans to actually bring a ‘Django Unchained’ miniseries to cable. But, while he mulls over returning to ‘Hateful Eight‘ and decides on his next original film, it’s certainly something that could keep him busy.
