Michael Stipe Says an R.E.M. Reunion ‘Will Never Happen’

In support of their recent comprehensive six-DVD set, 'REMTV,' R.E.M. frontman, Michael Stipe, made a stop by 'CBS This Morning' yesterday (Dec. 13) to chat with Anthony Mason, covering the band's "rise from college radio darlings to one of rock's biggest acts." Looking back on R.E.M.'s 31-year run, Stipe says, "There are humiliating moments ... and then, there are triumphant moments. It's the arc of an entire career." He goes on to admit about the DVD set, "We grew up in public. You watch us learn how to write songs. You watch us learn how to be public figures."

In a matter of just a few minutes, Mason and Stipe cover a lot, including what the future holds. When asked if he still sings, the iconic rocker says, "I sing in the shower, and I'm not bad. You would be surprised at my playlist." With a serious tone in his voice, though, he followed that up by unveiling that he thinks he'll sing again. When? "Not soon. Maybe. I don't know," he tells Mason.

And as far as the future of R.E.M. -- there really isn't one as Stipe says there will never be a reunion. "That will never happen. There's no point," he thoughtfully reveals. "I love those guys very much and I respect them hugely ... I just don't want to do that thing that people do. I don't want to do it ... I despise nostalgia. I'm not good at looking back."
