Soundgarden Rock ‘Superunknown’ in New York — Review and Photo Gallery

On March 8, 1994, Soundgarden released their fourth studio album, ‘Superunknown,’ an album that would eventually be certified platinum five times and become the band’s biggest success. Last night (June 2), a little over 20 years later, the band’s classic lineup gathered at Webster Hall in New York City to play the album in its entirety for an exclusive performance presented by Citi for Citi cardmembers.

Frontman Chris Cornell joined the stage with guitarist Kim Thayil, bassist Ben Shepherd and drummer Matt Cameron (who will not be behind the kit for the remaining Soundgarden shows this year while he tours with Pearl Jam) and played the album’s 15 tracks in order — and a couple extras — in a night most rock fans won’t soon forget.

At 9:30PM sharp, the four rockers walked out as the crowd expectedly went nuts. Cornell quieted them down a bit and let everyone know that the night would not be rushed, that it would feel more like everyone was just “hanging out.” With that, they kicked into their signature sound with opening track, ‘Let Me Drown.’ Stopping only for brief moments in-between songs to reflect on the history of ‘Superunknown,’ the band expertly pieced the album together over the course of 90 minutes.

Being in New York City, one of the premiere highlights of the show had to be when Shepherd walked up to Cornell’s microphone after the band finished ‘The Day I Tried to Live’ and reminded the crowd, “When this record came out the Rangers won the Stanley Cup.” For those in attendance, the coincidence of celebrating the anniversary of ‘Superunknown’ while preparing to cheer on the Rangers in this year’s Stanley Cup Finals was just too much. Almost immediately, the 1,500 fans started chanting “Let’s go Rangers” and to help them out, Cameron kept the beat going on the drums. With that, Soundgarden had five songs left to close out ‘Superunknown.’

The band wrapped up the set with a rocking rendition of the instrumental ‘Half’ and the final track on the album, ‘Like Suicide.’ It didn’t take long for Cornell and company to return to the stage to kick off a two-song encore with ‘Outshined’ and ‘Rusty Cage.’ If there was any question before last night’s show, it’s obvious that Soundgarden’s music stands the test of time. ‘Superunknown’, front to back, sounds as good today as it did in 1994, and if it’s possible, maybe even better.

A special 20th anniversary reissue of ‘Superunknown’ is available in a number of packages at the band’s online store and at iTunes.
