St. Vincent Discusses Origin of ‘Teenage Talk’ on ‘Fallon’ Web Video

St. Vincent is on the road and hitting the media circuit in support of her self-titled album released last year, but she appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon earlier this week and opted not to perform a track from her latest record; instead, she played her new non-album single, "Teenage Talk." In an online-exclusive video from The Tonight Show, which you can watch above, she explains the origin of the song, which started by "playing four-handed piano with a friend" in Austin, Texas, and came about "spontaneously."

"I decided to write a song about my particular group of girlfriends in high school," St. Vincent says. "We were a foursome, we were the kids that had older brother and sisters, so all we cared about was music, and you know, we had kind of the hot tip on what was good and what was lame."

"I feel super super blessed — which is not a word I even use — to have met them in the suburbs of Dallas, Texas and to have forged such a strong bond," she continues. "Basically, we were kind of outsiders and we had to find our way through the malaise of suburban Texas childhood."

"Teenage Talk" originally debuted on an episode of HBO's Girls, and the full version of the track was later released as a single, just hours before her Fallon appearance. St. Vincent has live dates scheduled between now and June, including appearances at Coachella, Boston Calling and Sasquatch Music Festival. Check out a complete list of upcoming performances here.
