School’s Sunscreen Ban Leaves Students Severely Burned

School Sunscreen Ban Leaves Two Students Burned

In a move that seems to defy all logic, a school in Washington State has banned the use of sunscreen, sending two sisters to the hospital with painful-looking sunburn after a field trip.

11-year-old Violet Michener and her 9-year-old sister Zoe, who has albinism and is particularly sun-sensitive, went on an all-day school event last Tuesday and were prohibited from applying sunscreen because it’s against state law.

“They couldn’t even reapply sunscreen without a doctor’s note. They couldn’t carry that in their backbacks,” said the mother of the two girls, who immediately took the children to the hospital after seeing the burns.

According to school officials, sunscreen is regulated by the FDA as an over-the-counter drug and many American schools don’t allow its use. “Because so many additives in lotions and sunscreens cause allergic reaction in children, you have to really monitor that,” said Dan Voelpel, Tacoma School District Spokesman.

But the girls’ mother was so outraged that she wrote an angry post on her blog and sparked a nationwide debate. Since then, the school district has agreed to revise the policy by October.

What do you think? Does it make sense to ban sunscreen from schools?
