A few days ago, I had a terrible, horrific dream. In it, my 9-year-old son was badly injured. I thought he was dead at first. Without going into graphic detail of what was a very vivid, realistic image in my mind, I awoke just as my boy began to open his eyes.

It stuck with me all weekend.  It's still with me right now.  It scared the hell out of me.

We've all heard motivational sayings like, "If you can dream it, you can be it!" and other such nonsense. However, it gave me pause to wonder: Can a dream or nightmare ever compel one to make a conscious change in their life?

I would submit that they can. Now, I'm not talking premonitions here (i.e., not getting on a flight because of a bad dream, etc.), I'm talking about a tangible daily change in the way you might behave that is different from before based solely on what your mind conjured while you slept.

About 20 years ago, I had a dream that my sister, who is 10 years younger than I, had died. In my dream, I didn't know how, I just knew she was dead.  The "people" around me were going on with their daily lives as if nothing had happened. I woke up sobbing. Literally sobbing. Not figuratively, literally. LITERALLY crying. It rocked me. I got up and found her alive and well. I told her that I loved her and -- TO THIS DAY -- whenever I see or talk to a person I truly love, I tell them exactly that before we part ways once again because, as we all know, we never know if/and/or when we will see them again.

Hashtag no regrets.
