Anyone in Yakima with a social media account has most likely had their feed littered with pics of kids heading off to their first day of school. My Facebook account is no exception.

Part of doing a morning radio show is having to be up and gone before anyone else in the house has gotten up to start their day. Which, of course, means missing out on sending your child out the door for their first day of a new school year.

Today my 11 year-old son Drew began his first year in middle school as a sixth-grader which, doing the quick math, means that this is also the seventh-consecutive year (including kindergarten) that I've missed getting to witness that first day excitement, new school threads and supplies and the eagerness that moving up another year brings. Luckily my wife is always thoughtful enough to snap a pic and text it to me as he heads out the door.

Cue up Harry Chapin's "Cat's in the Cradle".
