While the date April 20 has allowed us some lighthearted fun poking at "potheads," historically the week leading up to, and including, 4/20 has been one of notorious bloodshed in our country.

  • April 20, 1999, the deadliest high school shooting occurred at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo,. which killed 12 students, one teacher and injured 21 others.
  • April 20, 1889, Adolf Hitler was born. Need I say more?
  • April 19, 1995, The Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Okla., was bombed, killing 168 and injuring over 600 people. It was, until 9/11/01, the single-biggest terrorist attack on American soil.
  • April 19, 1993, The ATF siege of the Branch Davidian compound at Mount Carmel near Waco, Texas, ended after a 50-day standoff when the building was engulfed in flames, killing leader David Koresh as well as 73 other men, women and children.
  • April 19, 1775, the American Revolutionary War vs. Britain began with the "Shot Heard 'Round the World" sparking the battles of Lexington and Concord.
  • April 16, 2007, a lone gunman massacred 32, and injured 17 on the campus of Virginia Tech University.
  • April 15, 2013, the finish line at the annual running of the Boston Marathon was rigged with a bomb that exploded, killing three and injuring 264 others.

Maybe we should move 4/20 up to, say, 4/13 or 4/14. That way, everybody who is on edge can maybe just smoke and chill the eff out!
