Listen to a Song by Jeff Tweedy’s New Band

Wilco frontman Jeff Tweedy is taking a break from his full-time gig to test out some new projects. In addition to recently launching an acting career, Tweedy recently announced a solo tour.

And today his new band, simply called Tweedy, released its first song. It’s called ‘I’ll Sing It,’ and it comes from the group’s debut album, ‘Sukierae,’ which is out on Sept. 16. Give it a listen:

The group includes Jeff’s 18-year-old son Spencer, keyboardist Scott McCaughey (from Young Fresh Fellows and R.E.M.‘s touring band) and Lucius’ Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig on backing vocals.

And from the sound of things, Tweedy is a less complicated band than Wilco. The stripped-down track pretty much reveals its roots as a two-man group with a little help. Jeff wrote a whopping 20 songs for  ‘Sukierae.’

“When I set out to make this record, I imagined it being a solo thing, but not in the sense of one guy strumming an acoustic guitar and singing,” he said a statement. “Solo to me meant that I would do everything – write the songs, play all the instruments and sing. But Spencer’s been with me from the very beginning demo sessions, playing drums and helping the songs take shape. In that sense, the record is kind of like a solo album performed by a duo.”

Tweedy starts his solo tour, which, yes, includes his son on drums, tomorrow. Here’s the full itinerary:
