It can be tough to fit in as a teenager. It can also be tough to get along with your siblings. And if it turns out that your sibling is infected by some kind of psychotic worm virus that makes her want to murder you in your sleep? Maybe you find someone else to give her graduation ticket to.

According to the official plot synopsis, Viral tells the story of a group of teenagers whose neighborhood comes under a sudden quarantine when a mysterious virus starts making people sick. Not to be discouraged from doing the teenager thing, two sisters decide to blow off a little steam at a local party, only to be put in a situation where surviving the night might not mean they both make it out alive. The movie stars Analeigh Tipton (Warm Bodies, Lucy) as well as Sofia Black-D’Elia (The Immigrant, Project Almanac) and is directed by Paranormal Activity franchise veterans Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman.

I have always been of the opinion that a smart studio — and Blumhouse certainly qualifies as a smart studio — would think less rigidly about catering to a specific audience in their horror films. Rather than aiming your movie specifically at at the most generic crowd possible or at the most hardcore of horror enthusiasts, try and bring people along with movies like Viral, a lot of fans may never make the jump from one to the other. Give the YA crowd their own version of The Crazies to fall in love with and you never know, one of them might end up being the next great horror director of his or her generation.

You can read the full synopsis here:

Teenaged sisters Emma (Sofia Black-D’Elia) and Stacey (Analeigh Tipton) live a normal life, until their small suburban neighborhood is stricken with a mysterious parasitic virus. As the disease rapidly spreads throughout the town, the two band together to barricade themselves from infection. But it may already be too late – when the virus enters their home, the sisters are faced with an impossible choice: protect each other, or survive the virus.

Viral will be available in theaters and on digital HD on July 29. You can find it on DVD or on VOD just a few days later on Aug. 2.
