Weekend Box Office Report: ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ Rules the Box Office

20th Century Fox

The Memorial Day weekend brought with it the third Marvel superhero movie of 2014, and like ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier‘ and ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2,’ ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past‘ opened to over $90 million at the box office. Sure, people online keep on wondering if audiences are getting tired of comic book films, but the box office keeps on saying otherwise.

Film Weekend Per Screen
1 X-Men: Days of Future Past $90,700,000 $22,698 $90,700,000

3 Blended $14,425,000 $4,007 $14,245,000
4 Neighbors $13,946,000 (-44.4) $4,270 $113,626,000
5 The Amazing Spider-Man 2 $7,800,000 (-53.6)

9 Chef $2,260,000 (+218.9) $4,538 $3,548,000
10 Heaven Is for Real $1,950,000 (-55.5) $1,134 $85,750,000

When the dust settles at the end of the four-day holiday weekend, the final opening number for ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ will be north of $100 million. In the meantime, $90 million for the first three days will do nicely. That’s a smaller opening than ‘Godzilla‘ or ‘Captain America 2,’ but the difference is negligible. ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ is off to an incredibly strong start — the only question now is about momentum. This was a very expensive movie and a great opening weekend doesn’t guarantee it actually being a hit in the long run. Just look at ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′ in the fifth slot in the top 10, which opened great but is now struggling to break $200 million. If audiences actually respond to this one (like they did with ‘Captain America 2′), healthy legs won’t be a problem and it’ll stick around for awhile.

The holiday weekend’s other big release didn’t fair nearly as well. ‘Blended‘ opened with a mediocre $14 million, instantly putting it on the low end of Adam Sandler comedies (box office wise and critically). We’re not sure if this was Sandler fatigue or the X-Men just blindsiding a smaller film (albeit, one that no one was particularly excited about), but we are currently living in a world where a Leslie Mann/Cameron Diaz comedy is a big hit and a Sandler flick is not — ‘The Other Woman‘ (spot number seven) will break $80 million soon, and ‘Blended’ will be lucky to hit $30 million.

‘Godzilla,’ last week’s champion, took the typical second week stumble, falling down to $31 million for a two-week total of $148 million. The film has proven divisive among moviegoers, so it’ll be interesting to watch how it progresses from this point. It has a real shot at breaking $200 million if it keeps some momentum going, but the mixed buzz isn’t doing it too many favors. In any case, international grosses will keep it healthy in the long run.

While other films hung out in the box office top 10 because they simply existed (no one is really seeing ‘Rio 2,’ ‘Heaven Is for Real’ or ‘Million Dollar Arm‘), ‘Chef‘ expanded from limited release into slightly less limited release, grossing $2 million for a $3 million total. That’s not great, but it’s also not bad for a movie that’s only playing at a few hundred theaters. It’ll be interesting to watch as it expands wider next week.
