YWCA Of Yakima Offers A Chance To Win Serena Williams Purse

The month of October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and hundreds of YWCA organizations across the country are doing their part to raise awareness of the domestic violence crisis in America.

Our local YWCA in Yakima is actively involved in eliminating racism and empowering women in the Yakima Valley. In addition to providing volunteers for local community events, the non-profit hosts social justice awareness events for children and adults, operates Persimmon Boutique (4001 Summitview Ave Suite 4), provides outreach and housing support servicesfor those in need and maintains the Women's Domestic Violence Emergency Shelter.

This month, the YWCA of Yakima is also participating in the Allstate Foundation's Purple Purse Challenge fundraiser, and is raffling off a purple purse designed by global tennis champion, Serena Williams.

Why the color purple?

In most cases, victims suffering from domestic violence are afraid to leave their abusers because they will face economic instability. Domestic violence doesn't just include physical abuse; it can mean emotional, psychological, verbal and financial abuse. The use of the color purple symbolizes a commitment to helping survivors gain financial independence from their domestic violence abusers.

The YWCA of Yakima has been working to end domestic violence for the last 40 years. Today, we operate a 14 room (44 bed) emergency shelter for domestic violence victims and 15 transitional apartments (ranging from one bedroom to three bedrooms). We provide crisis, housing and legal advocacy.
