It was a great day at the YWCA in Yakima. They were presented with a check worth $480,000 from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Seattle in partnership the two local banks, Yakima Federal Savings and Loan and Central Valley Bank. The event drew some very influential people all united behind the cause of rescuing women from abusive relationships.

Remarks were given by 4th District Congressman Doc Hastings about the importance of the YWCA and the impact their work has had on Central Washington families. Also speaking at the event were 14th District State Representative Norm Johnson and 14th District State Senator Curtis King, who talked about the tenacity of YWCA Executive Director Erin Black and the board of Directors in their quest for funding from the WA State Legislature. US Senator Patty Murray’s Central WA Director Rebecca Thornton read remarks on behalf of the Senator thanking the two local banks for coming together on this important project.

Also on hand from Seattle for this event was the President and CEO of the Federal Home Loan Bank of Seattle who talked about the 10 percent of their annual income that they use to fund affordable housing projects in their large western district. YWCA Executive Director Erin Black thanked everyone who made their new shelter a reality and talked about how everyone in Central Washington now has place to go when they are confronted with and abusive situation. The YWCA’s current transitional housing program serves 16 families facing homelessness in the Yakima Valley.
