With Yakima experiencing 100 degree days in late spring, it's a good reminder to stay cool and stay hydrated the best you can.

It's not always an option for many to just jump in a pool or leave town or something to escape the heat. These things can cost money.

Fortunately, there are some alternatives to beat this heatwave that Yakima is experiencing and will experience again later this summer.

Ways to Stay Cool for Free

There's plenty of usual ways like take a cool shower or bath, using fans, not to use the oven, and a lot more that make sense. But what about some that are a little less obvious?

A few of these may be a little less convenient, but it's something you can do.

Stick Your Head in the Freezer
First and what could be the most popular is to just stick your head in the freezer. You don't have to do it very long and it's advised you don't. That quick hit of cool air does feel pretty nice, though. Just don't let your popsicles melt.

Run Through a Sprinkler
Never mind your age, if it's hot, don't worry about what the public thinks.
And it doesn't even need to be your sprinkler.

Visit URM Cash and Carry
One of my favorite sections of Costco is that walk-in fridge section. Especially in the summer. However, not everyone has a Costco card. They also have beer fridge sections of many mini-marts around Yakima but you need to be 21+ to enter those.
Fortunately, you don't need to be card-carrying member of URM to go to that store. They have a walk-in freezer section. I wouldn't recommend loitering, but I've certainly taken my time to read every ingredient of many products they keep in that walk-in freezer.

Open Windows on Both Sides of Your Place
This is something I never knew about until I moved to a place where most people didn't have air conditioning.
Reason being is if you create a cross-breeze by opening a window on the east side and west side (or north and south) that cross-breeze should take out all that stagnant hot air. It's like when it's a little breezy and both sides of the door are open and blow around all the straw wrappers in your car - same concept.

A Single Ice Cube on Key Spots
It doesn't take an ice bath to cool off. Even just placing an ice cube on your inner-wrist or, for me, the nape of my neck can do a lot for my entire body. It's like it's cooling the blood which travels to everywhere else.

I'm sure there are plenty more. Can always app-chat us your favorites.
