We’re Almost There! Over Half of WA Schools Offer Free Meals
Our kids in the Yakima school district have been enjoying; not just free lunches, but free breakfast as well as meals during summer break for the past several years now.
And while other school districts around Washington State are still catching on, Washington State still isn't 100% free meals for public school students.
At least, not yet.
According to Washington State Standard, 70% of schools in Washington State are practicing free meals for their students.
It's a great number, over 50%, but would be nice to make it even more.
What can be done to get others schools to have a free meal program?
Money.
Plain and simple.
There's a Washington State Legislature bill HB 1238 - 2023-24 to provide school meals for everyone in the school if the average income is at a certain level.
This is why it's so important that when you get that form in the mail at the beginning of the school year, that you fill it out and send it back so they know the funding for free meals can continue.
There is plenty of reason to keep our kids fed. Hungry kids are more apt to not concentrate at school and could show a decline in work.
I'm sure most grown-ups feel this way around lunchtime when they just want to work but their stomach is telling them otherwise.
Now consider that but then at school where you can't just leave and still have to sit through lunch not eating. Doesn't sound fun.
Not just Yakima but anyone in any WA school district, fill out that form you get from the school in hopes the school will fund the free meals program in your district.
