With Great Power Comes Great Purses!

You may have heard the quote "He who controls the purse strings makes the rules". American diplomat and politician Henry Kissinger once said, "Who controls money can control the world." Oftentimes, when a woman is seeking to escape their abusive partner, one of the reasons they don't immediately leave is because they do not have the financial means to flee because their abusive partner controls the financial accounts in the relationship. These finances are symbolized by the purse and by the color purple.

We are (thankfully) far removed from the days when all purses were tiny and handbags could only fit small items like face powder, church fans, and mini-sized makeup items or perfume. While it is true that over the years, carry certain handbags is seen as a symbol of wealth and status in society, some of us just love the look of a purse. A lot of women are not concerned with which designer's name is on the label, but it does add a certain value to the product.

Some of the oldest handbag designers in the world include Hermés (who is celebrating their 200th anniversary), Prada, Chanel, Louis Vuitton and more (see the top 10 list here).

Women in Yakima enjoy opportunities to buy purses (in all sizes) and the YWCA knows that putting on an event like the Power of the Purse will be a win-win for everyone. The Power of the Purse fundraiser will use the money raised to benefit programs helping local Yakima Valley women and children escape their abusive homes.

Purses will be available for purchase for $5, $10, $15 and $20. There will be purses in the Silent Auction and select purses for bidding in the Live Auction. (Check out some of the purses here.)
