The year was 1932 and the song "I love a parade" by Harry Richman was a hit!

"I love a parade; A handful of vets, A line of cadets, Or any brigade, For I love a parade! Look, here they come! Oh what a sight! Listen to the crowd! They're cheering hip hip hooray! Oh, everybody loves a parade!'

Who Doesn't Love A Parade?

Parades seem to resurrect feelings of old-school patriotism...and that's Great!

"Leadership involves finding a parade and getting in front of it", wrote John Naisbitt, author of the 1882 megahit book “Megatrends.

Well, Yakima has a parade, the Sunfair Parade, and it has a leader, or a Grand Marshall in Holly Cousens!  So what are we waiting for!  After a year off due to COVID-19, Yakima's Sunfair Parade will once again follow its familiar route of more than one-and-a-half miles through Downtown Yakima this Saturday, September 25th.

As per usual, the parade begins at 10:00 am and is expected to last until 1:00 pm. The time off seems to have increase interest and participation with about 1,000 participants and 200 vehicles expected to make their way down Yakima Avenue from 16th Avenue to Naches Avenue.

Drivers Beware

As a result, this Saturday 16th Avenue will be closed from Nob Hill Boulevard to Summitview Avenue from 6:00 am to 1:00 pm. Also, Yakima Avenue will be closed Saturday from 16th Avenue to 6th Street from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.

The parade route will be closed to traffic, and side streets along the parade route will also be closed to through traffic while the parade is underway. As the last entries in the parade pass by the closed side streets, they will be reopened to traffic.

Due to the parade, Yakima Transit will not start bus service on any routes on Saturday until 12:45 pm. Special shuttles from the Gateway Center to State Fair Park will run as scheduled while the parade is underway.

Masks? At A Parade?

And yes, the elephant in the room IS wearing a mask...and participants and spectators are asked to wear face coverings too due to a statewide mask requirement for outdoor activities featuring 500 or more people. How that works with 76 trombones remains to be seen.
